For a couple of months now it's been rumored that Vinnie Mac would take another run at the NFL by relaunching his own football league, whether it's still branded the XFL or something else, we may find out this afternoon, if ESPN is correct...

WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon is set to announce that he will make another attempt at starting a professional football league, sources told ESPN.

Alpha Entertainment, a company that McMahon formed, issued a media advisory Thursday saying that McMahon would have a "major sports announcement" on Thursday afternoon.

Last month WWE filed paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission stating that McMahon would sell about $100 million in stock to fund Alpha Entertainment, a company founded to make investments "including professional football."

It is not clear whether McMahon will use the name XFL, the ill-fated football league he co-owned with NBC that lasted only one season in 2001, but Alpha has filed trademarks for that name.

Good for him. I watched the 30 for 30 on the XFL and felt bad for old Vinny Mac. I hope he succeeds.

Forming a partnership with Dana White is the only way he succeeds...

Here's the Vinnie Mac press conference making it official:

Cliffs from ESPN below. Anyone want to take a stab at which 8 cities will field teams? Someone in the press conference asks about San Diego, which does seem like a prime location.

WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon announced Thursday he is giving a professional football league another go.

It will be called the XFL, the same name of the league McMahon and NBC tried for one season in 2001, but it won't rely on flashy cheerleaders and antics as its predecessor did, he said.

McMahon said he is the sole funding source for the league, which is slated to begin in January 2020. Its first season will have eight teams around the country playing a 10-week schedule. The initial outlay of money is expected to be around $100 million, the same amount of WWE stock McMahon sold last month and funneled into Alpha Entertainment, the company he founded for the project.

Interesting timing given the current irritation that some fans have with the NFL.
