Even if you aren’t one anymore what mistakes have you made and thought “ damn that was a rookie mistake”.

I am a white belt and in the heat of the moment make silly mistakes all the time. The latest one was getting my leg lock escapes mixed up and trying to spin out of a straight footlock. Luckily the blue belt let it go a bit and my knee is just very sore but that could have been disaster.

Any of you got any stories?

When I first got into jiu jitsu I shot in for a single leg with my head on the outside and got cross faced and told not to do that ever again.....shot again with the head on the outside to test how sound this advice was and got my left temple pulled tight against his hip and he locked a gable grip around my temple with his wrist on my temple....it was excruciatingly painful....I couldn’t tap fast enough.....”told you not to do that, didn’t I”

That's the beauty of BJJ, no matter what skill level you are, you'll always make mistakes, you'll always learn something.... It could be trying a new set up, a new sweep, an escape, you'll sit there and say "let's see what happens when I do this" and it ends with your teammates waking you up from passing out. Always keep the white belt mind and humility and you'll see massive gains in your training your whole career...... Some of my BEST training today, is when me and a bunch of other black belts get together to show new techniques and workshop things, half the time it's like a newborn baby deer learning to walk on an ice patch, but it's awesome.

AKA- learning the slow way, or the only way I seem to learn anything Grappling related. I have to make all possible mistakes before I start doing the right thing simply because there are no other new mistakes to make.

Tucking my chin to fight a RNC. Carlos Diaz taught me two things:
1) a black belt squeeze is to be respected.
2) "the jaw is a movable joint. If it can move, it can break."

Another lesson I learned was don't take a big breath, exhale a big breath. You can pull in more air by exhaling everything out and letting your body's reflexive inhalation response pull in air than you can by trying to inhale in as much as possible.

I find too many times I'm empty handed or just using an open hand to try and control.
