Scientists have found a new solar system filled with planets that look like Earth and could support life, Nasa has announced.

At least three of the seven planets represent the “holy grail for planet-hunting astronomers”, because they sit within the “temperate zone” and are the right temperature to allow alien life to flourish, the researchers have said. And they are capable of having oceans, again suggesting that life could flourish on them.

No other star system has ever been found to contain so many Earth-sized and rocky planets, of the kind thought to be necessary to contain aliens.

The researchers might soon be able to find evidence of life on the planets, they have said. British astronomer Dr Chris Copperwheat, from Liverpool John Moores University, who was part of the international team, said: “The discovery of multiple rocky planets with surface temperatures which allow for liquid water make this am
Any evidence of life is likely to be “strong, very strong or conclusive”, the scientists said. It will be done by looking for what molecules are in the atmosphere – if they were to find things like oxygen, and in the right amounts, then it would probably indicate that there was biological activity.

Co-researcher Dr Amaury Triaud, of the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, said: “We hope we will know if there's life there within the next decade.”
azing system an exciting future target in the search for life."
Even if life isn’t ever found near TRAPPIST-1, it might eventually develop there. The star is relatively young – even when our own Sun has run out of fuel and our solar system is destroyed, the newly-discovered one will still be in its early infancy.

TRAPPIST-1 “burns hydrogen so slowly that it will live for another 10 trillion years – more than 700 times longer than the Universe has existed so far, which is arguably enough time for life to evolve”, wrote Ignas AG Snellen from the Leiden Observatory, in an accompanying article about the discovery.
All of the planets were found using a method called “transit photometry”. That works by watching out for when a planet passes, or transits, in front of its host star – blocking out a small amount of light, allowing us to see the planet and learn about its size.

Scientists first found the star TRAPPIST-1 in 2010, after monitoring the smallest stars close to the Sun. Since then, they have been watching out for those transits – and after seeing 34 of them clearly, they proposed that they can be attributed to the seven new planets.

They then worked to understand the size and composition of each of the worlds. That work is still continuing, but the researchers believe that the planets have large oceans, are temperate and other conditions that could make way for alien life.

My only Question is , "Will Aliens be as shitty as humans?"

I was confused by the thread title at first, but this is cool stuff.

And lol at "will aliens be as shitty as humans".

I've been on a big space/universe kick lately, I love reading and (trying) to learn about this. There used to be a showing netflix called How the Universe Works. It's not in Netflix anymore, but it's on YouTube as a live feed where they just stream through the series 24 hrs a day. I've been having that play on my second monitor while I work for the past week or so. It's a great series.

What if it's just us...We are the alien life.
Well crash land and a million years from now they'll be saying the same thing about earth.

All the planets are within the orbit of Mercury, which, if their sun is anything like ours, would mean the planets are extremely hot during their days.

That's an interesting perspective to ponder, it's just as plausible as anything else.

There very well may be other life forms that have existed either in our galaxy, or in some other solar system out there. But the I think the fascinating question is are those life forms intelligent (sentient beings), or are they simple life forms (bacteria, microbes, single cell organisms, etc.)?

It's possible there have been many other forms of life in the universe that have come and gone (and on the other side of the coin, haven't come in to existence yet). Alien life isn't necessarily going to be contemporaneous with Earth. Each solar system is unique and they follow their own life cycle and evolution.

Its could be we are the only intelligent beings , but other life form should exist on other planets.

This has all happened before and will happen again
The real question is why the fuck are we here? what the fuck are we doing here?
what is gonna happen after we die?
how the hell were all these complex living things created?

I'm doing a lot of reading on habit changing and the evolutionary benefits.
The idea is that if things are habits, you free up brain power for complex thinking. So walking and backing out of the driveway don't take any brain effort. You can back out while realizing you left the oven on.

This moves to learning about addicts and how some manage to stop these self destructive behaviors.

So researchers start talking about alcoholics, AA and, other large scale habit changing.

Individuals start talking about God and a higher power. They went through motions, go to meeting, change home life. Then fall off the wagon when life gets tough.

But not very often when they believe in God or a higher power. Scientifically, that last piece changes the individual ability to beat bad habits.

Researchers hate this of course. You can't measure it.

But it does beg the question about the role of God, a higher power, and self surrender in the actual human condition.

what i have noticed in life that people who are very religious are the ones who cheat , lie and are deceitful .
I don't understand what you are trying to explain with addicts?

Says who? They found planets that could support "life" as we know it, but that feels fairly narrow-minded.

Who is to say what temperate zone is necessary for alien life? Maybe there are aliens out there that live off of fire and can't survive in temperatures that are below 500 degrees?

If this type of shit was true than mars would have life.

How the fuck do they determine temperature and atmosphere on a planet 40 light years away?

That's like 240,000,000,000,000 miles away.

My point is your general "what's the point of life?"
That's an open ended questions that begs the discussion of individuals vs Community vs spiritual powers.

I'm simply commenting on a tangential topic I'm currently reading about that suggests the need for spirituality/God/something to maximally defeat self destructive behaviors and to reinforce good habits.

Maybe it's a crutch, but if so, it's a scientifically meaurable that such a crutch results in improved outcomes in kicking bad habits and creating good habits.

What's the point of life? Maybe something to do with God. At least humans appear wired that way currently.

Not totally sure about determining temperature, but I think they can determine what gasses are present in an atmosphere based on what light spectrum it is emitting.

I'd assume temperature is determined based on the mass of the star a planet is orbiting and the distance between the two?

Generalized guesses here...

We obviously don't know for sure, but they're following the principle of uniformitarianism (the same natural laws that control the universe today, have always controlled the universe and apply everywhere in the universe).

They're orbiting a much dimmer star. Less heat output, so the Habitable Zone (where liquid water can exist) moves in.

They can see distance from the star and the star's magnitude. The planets pass between Earth and the Star in a distinct way that indicates composition, additionally, the light spectrum emitted indicates atmospheric composition. Size is also a factor. Also, they're scientists, and smarter than you or I.

If this type of shit was true than mars would have life.
Mars is on the outer edge of our Habitable Zone. Also, it does have water- about a liter for every cubic foot of Martian Soil. Theory is that Mars DID support simple life at one point.

I think the main issue with these types of discoveries is: so what? With current tech it would take too long to get a message to them or from them, and physically getting there is damn near out of the question unless there's some unforeseeable quantum leap in space travel tech.

So... we're just counting planets for the foreseeable future. It's cool to know, I guess.
