Larger than a 3 inch blade? 3 Inch blades are legal in the UK, but no longer. Pocket knives, Swiss army knives, etc, are perfectly fine and legal. That's not what this is for.I always carry a knife. I don't even think twice about it.

A cannon fires a projectile. That's its purpose, it doesn't become a weapon until you shoot those projectiles with intent to harm. Tanks are essentially a combination of other inventions. Something like a nuclear warhead would better fit the description of something designed purely to hurt people, even then I don't know that to be accurate. The technology in them was likely designed for something else and later weaponized.

How exactly do you quantify that? A box full of knives just means that a lot of knives were unwanted and needed to be disposed of. It might be different in the UK, but declaration of intent isn't part of an amnesty here.

An amnesty puts out the thought of getting rid of the weapons, placing it in an offenders mind and gets them thinking about it. Anyone that just wanted to get rid of old kitchen knives can just throw them in the bin, they don't need to be prompted. The amnesty bin offers a place where someone can throw the weapon away anonymously and without the fear of being arrested over it. If a few extra knives are put in there, who cares, an amnesty is resource cheap and any results are a positive.

Because it pushes a false narrative that knives are too dangerous for people to have and that limiting a freedom is for your own good. Your whole stated thought process is laughable. "If someone just wants to get rid of old kitchen knives they'll throw them away." Okay, that makes sense. You don't want something you throw it away. "But a potential criminal needs to be prompted and a special box put out for them."
Because you're now going from trying to "prevent crime" to rounding up household goods. It's fucking lunacy that a police department is putting out a box asking for pocket knives and screwdrivers in the name of public safety. The only thing crazier is that people think it promotes public safety.

I think that's why knifes are mostly used to attack, and not so much to defend. I have a knife but would not grab for it to defend myself. That would be a bat or a gun. But yes, a knife requires you to get up close and personal, and messy.
