It seems the only songs in contention are classic rock songs by white people in the 70s/80s, odd.

I picked by lyrics+talent+ "it factor"

You have to pick one. We didn't get to pick one from each genre.

Others are stronger in individual areas, but what would you pick that outdoes a broad category of criteria?

I can pick lyrically strong rap, but it's often lacking in associated musical creation.

I can pick orchestral arrangements that will take years to write more technically sound pieces. But is the best song one that has no words? Maybe.

Hotel California is, IMAO, an example of a formulaic and over-produced record.

Like everybody else, I can't pick one...but for today, in this thread, Tom Petty - Wildflowers
the lyrics are poignant, striking a very specific emotional chord relating to wishing the best for someone you love, while hoping that you can be a part of their perfect world. Musically, every note and chord is purposeful, and the arrangement resists the urge to fill every second with superfluous twiddling, letting Mike Campbell's brilliant rhythms and the Heartbreakers' perfect harmonization bloom.

Pour up a Zima princess, it wasn't an insult to those bands.

Again it was meant as a compliment. Those bands have such a great collection of music it's a shame only 2 or 3 get radio play. I usually listen to albums in their entirety so I can appreciate more than what makes the top 40 or whatever.

My point was if people are using depth of lyrics and composition as a tool to measure there are other genres and eras with serious talent if you can get past the fact you just don't like the music.

I doubt most people over 40 listen to rap but an album like GZAs Liquid Swords is incredible for it's lyrics and other things people in here have used to justify best ever.

Classic rock has always been in my top 3 genres since I was a kid but it's the last thing I'd put on if I'm working out (exception being AC/DC or something, my old kickboxing coach would have it top volume every class the whole time) There's a time and place for every track so I'm not able to select just one, need a scenario.

All right, though there's been a few decent nominations...for the most part this thread is shit.

But have no fear seekntruth is here to save it.

There is no other contender that is even close. It's an undeniable fact. Your opinion is overruled.

If you disagree with my pick please let me know so I can put you on my "ignore the retards" list... Ftr, it only has one poster on it as of now... La Paix @BirdWatcher (that's cuz he wants to have butt secs with me...aka Canadian secs)

Without further ado...

You're welcome!

Nice, now this thread is officially "songs that are over played to death but let's keep playing them because I can't move forward in life"

Music has been around forever, so anyone just picking something from their youth.. dis-fucking-qualified.

I'm gonna post this just as an example, you all know it coz its so powerful it transcends trends.

Its part of a much bigger piece btw. Sadly its so overused in commercials and pop culture people don't get the message and drama behind it.
The subject is "songs". This is more of a production with an orchestra. While incredibly more involved and impressive, it doesn't fit into the title of a "song", imo.

When people talk about Bach, they don't say "My favorite song is Toccata in D Minor"

Comparing musical compositions to songs is like comparing The Bubonic Plague to a common cold.

Wasting your breath. He's German...it'll be at least another 75 years before anyone cares about their opinion again ;)

Song has a very broad definition, so I disagree with that. We use the German translation for it (Lied) for that anyway. But of course you could say its a short piece too.

Would you call these songs?:

I think we should have a grand prix.

Leigh @Leigh ?

First we need conclusive, decisive determinations of each great bands best song.
Then we can move forward.
Until then ALL of TMMAC is on my ignore list.
